Your Life-Saving Shopping List

4 Life-saving foodsThe items you put in your trolley could hold the key to greater energy, better health and even a longer life. So, the next time you go shopping for groceries to a mall, make sure you stock up on these four super foods...

  • Walnuts
    Combat Cholestrol

Walnuts are rich in fibre, which stimulates the production of bile, helping draw unwanted cholesterol out of the liver. They also contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are required for making a positive type of cholesterol that encourages the dangerous form to break down. If your cholesterol is normal, you should eat a handful the day before you plan to have a very rich meal as the fibre helps prevent the saturated fat from turning into unwanted cholesterol.

  • Seaweed
Boosts metabolism and helps fight breast cancer
Seaweed is rich in iodine, which is essential for the functioning of the thyroid hormones that control metabolism. It's also high in lignans, which help block chemical oestrogens that can predispose poeople to breast cancer. If you're wondering how should you take this, you can try adding dried seaweed to curries or any other food items you consume on a daily basis. Your daily iodine intake should be about 10g.

  • Pumpkin Seeds
    Boost fertility
The zinc in pumpkin seeds has an amazing effect on the male and female fertility because it aids the reproductive hormones. It also helps to produce the enzymes that strengthen the immune system. You can try adding a handful to salads or rice dishes.

  • Tea
    Prevents tooth decay
"Bizarrely, tea leaves are a great natural source of fluoride. Fluoride protects teeth by strengthening tooth enamel. You can drink tea in moderation, two or three cups a day should be enough. If you're a health freak, you can have it without sugar," adds Mumbai-based nutritionist Darshana Shah.
