5 Healthy Breakfast Options to Start Your Day With
|
We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but a lot of us skip breakfast and end up overeating at lunch. Why? because most of us are in a hurry to rush to work in the mornings or some of us think skipping breakfast can help lose weight. Remember, its your breakfast that sets the foundation for your body’s energy usage for the rest of the day. You can skip your lunch and just have a fruit but make sure you eat properly in the morning. And, when we say eat properly, we do not mean oily paratha's, butter and cheese sandwiches or deep-fried medu wada's, etc. We list down 5 healthy breakfast options you can start your day with...
Food #1: Wheat/Corn Flakes
This is very light, crunchy and not very sweet. You can have a big bowl of wheat/corn flakes with either cold or warm milk. If you don't like plain milk, you can add a spoon of honey to it or some fruits but do not add sugar to the milk. If you're wondering which of the two are healthier? we'd say as long as you stick to the natural taste and avoid adding sugar to your cereal, both of these are healthy breakfast options. They're fat-free and cholesterol-free cereals. Try and have cereals for breakfast 5 days a week and you'll feel the difference.
Food #2: Oatmeal
You can either bring some oatmeal to a boil in some water or milk. Add some fresh strawberries, a few slices of apple or raisins to it and your breakfast is ready! If you feel hungry during the day, you could munch on 2-3 oatmeal cookies. Oatmeal is healthy and filling and is a good source of carbohydrates to keep you energized throughout the day. It's also a good source of protein.
Food #3: 2 Egg Whites and 2 Slices of Bread / Chutney Sandwich
Egg whites are low in calories and high in protein. You can make a choice, if you like eggs, you could go for 2 boiled egg whites with 2 slices of either brown bread or wholemeal bread (without butter or mayonnaise) and a cup of green tea. If not that, you could eat a toasted chutney sandwich and have a glass of milk or a cup of green tea. Remember, always choose brown or wholemeal bread, as they're considered to be a healthier choice. As far as green tea goes, it helps your body regulate its metabolism. So, in stead of having a cup of tea/coffee with sugar, switch to green tea.
Food #4: Vegetable Egg
If you're the types who wakes up early and is never late to work, then this one's for you. You can prepare a healthy vegetable omlette in just half a tsp of olive oil. Scrambled eggs (prepared from 2 egg whites and 1 egg yolk) with tomatoes, onions, broccoli, salt, pepper (and some chilli flakes if you like it spicy) is a great way to start your day. This is definitely not going to take you more than 10 minutes to prepare it. If you want you can have it with a slice of bread.
Food #5: Fruits
Fruits are better than fruit juices, but if you must have a glass of fruit juice, opt for fresh juice prepared at home than the canned one's. Fruit juice contains more vitamins, agreed! But remember, for a glass of juice you need more fruits and the more the fruits the more the sugar, since juice is packed with the fruit’s natural sugars. So, you can start your day with a mixed fruit platter including: apple, water melon, papaya, pear and orange. These are all citrus fruits, which are rich in fibre and water. They fill your stomach and take time to digest, which helps you maintain a sense of fullness. Citrus fruits are so full of water and the water that's released into the body when consumed helps to smooth out skin.
