The Man Behind IBFW: Vijay Singh

 The six-day India Bridal Fashion Week (IBFW) was a huge success with some of India's biggest fashion designers showcasing their creations. The event was a success not just for it's creations but also for reaons like the hair do, make up, set up, etc. Hats off to the Fashion One team along with Marc Robinson and the man behind it all, Vijay Singh. We spoke to Vijay Singh, Managing Director, Fashion One International Pvt. Ltd and Founder of IBFW about the fashion show and here's what he had to say...
- With some of the best Indian designers participating in the Fashion Week, how has the response been so far?
It's been fabulous. I have been associated with the fashion industry for the last 10 years and this was our third edition of the India Bridal Fashion Week. When such leading Indian designers are a part of the show, the event had to be successful. This fashion show was meant for the bridal segment and every designer's creation showcased was unique in it's own way. They were all fabulous. This wouldn't have been possible without them.
- How did the concept of Bridal Fashion come about?
Weddings have always been a special occasion and nothing less than a carnival of dreams and ambitions in India. Inspite of that, I think the bridal segment was ignored in the fashion industry. Fashion designers only contributed to the western crowd over the years. Their creations didn't really connect much with the Indian market, where as the wedding market in India is huge. Also, no matter how educated, modern or rich you are, when it comes to weddings, we Indians do go back to traditions and royalty. So, that's when I thought why not come up with a platform that showcases bridal couture catering to the Indian taste. These creations are just perfect for brides, who love everything chic, contemporary and feminine.
- What is your take on bridal fashion for the new-age bride?
I think, even when we talk about the new age brides, they would still want to be the focal point on their wedding day. For that you need to look the best and be dressed in the best outfit, make up, hair, etc. Shararas, ghararas, lehengas will never go out of fashion. Even saree's, which our Indian designers have brought a twist in look great on brides. Women these days are looking for a change - something that's new and trendy and that's exctly what the India Bridal Fashion Week showcased.
- Who decides about who are the designers participating in the show? Or are they open to participate?
We invite designers. We send them a mail and once they show interest in being a part of the fashion show, we shortlist some of the best designers, keeping in mind their experience and the kind of work they've done in the past. This time, we've had top notch designers inluding Tarun Tahiliani, JJ Valaya, Narendra Kumar Ahmed, Vikram Phadnis and Shantanu & Nikhil to name a few.
- Are young talents allowed to showcase their creations on this stage?
Absolutely, why not? But like I said, it also depends on the kind of work you've done in the past. So, if a particular designer has done shows where s/he has showcased his/her designs and has done a good job, we would love to have them showcase their work on our platform.
- When do the auditions actually begin for finalizing the models?
This is a long process and the hunting begins at least 6 months in advance. Of course, but choosing the best of the lot happens about 3 months in advance. Again, ust like the designers we need to make sure we have the right kind of models on ramp. After all, it's the model who'll be showing the designer's creation. So, s/he needs to be really good. And we've had some of the best models walk the ramp that includes names like Aanchal Kumar, Nethra Raghuraman, Shruti Agarwal and Deepti Gujral to name a few.
- Last year actress Kangana Ranaut was the face of the week and this time it's Ankita Shorey. Why is that? Why not someone as big as Kangna this year too?
We were looking for a new face, who could blend well with beauty and elegance. Ankita is beautiful and fits our brand. She won the title of Pantaloons Femina Miss India International, 2011. I think she's a perfect combination of beauty and style. Right from her looks to the way she carries herself, everything is just perfect about her.
- What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion is definitely one of the most vibrant industries you could come into. Also, the best part about fashion is that it has no boundaries for talent, in terms of age and gender – anybody can make it as long as they have talent. To me, it means something you're comfortable in and something that's unique and different. Fashion keeps changing. No matter how different it is, but it has to be something that consumers can connect with. Fashion is all about bringing the best of designs to people every year.
- Who are some of your personal favourite designers?
Well, that's a tough one (laughs). I can't name just one. I have soo many favourites and that includes every designer who's a part of the IBFW.
